GI TAG - AMALSAD CHIKOO

Geographical Indication (GI) tag is a mark used on natural and man-made products that identifies
the product as originating from a specific geographical location. India, as a member of the World Trade
Organization (WTO), implemented the Geographical Indications (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999,
which came into force on September 15, 2003. Through which local production is supported and can be
helpful in mainstreaming and uplifting rural and tribal communities. Currently, a total of 605 items in India
have received GI tag, which includes handicrafts, agricultural products, food items, natural products, etc.
Out of which, Gujarat state has received 28 GI tags so far, of which three were received in agricultural
sectors - Gir KESAR mango , BHALIYA wheat and Kutch KHAREK. The application for GI tag for "Amalsad
Chiku" was filed by Valsad Navsari District Fruit and Vegetable Cooperative Society Ltd., Ta. Gandevi,
Navsari Agricultural University and Gujarat Council of Science and Technology (Gujcoast). Under the
guidance of Samiksha Dabhade, an expert lawyer in the field of GI. AMALSAD V.V.K.S.KHEDUT MANDLI
LTD.AMALSAD present documentary evidence related to Chiku, interviews with farmers growing Chiku,
visiting their fields, making a documentary about 80- to 90-year-old trees, and undertaking work on GI
registration, an application was prepared in the year 2020, which was approved by the GI Registry Office,
Chennai on March 27, 2025. From now on, in the coming time, another GI tag named “Amalsad Chiku”
which is grown in the South Gujarat region and has a unique taste, aroma and flavor, will be available in
the agricultural sector, which is a great honor for everyone associated with Chiku. By getting this tag,

along with creating a unique and prominent identity of the Chiku of this region in the country and
globally, the demand for Chiku of this region will increase, which will directly benefit the farmers growing
Chiku of this region.
The first cultivation of Chiku in Gujarat was done in the year 1924-25 in Amalsad village of Gandevi taluka
of navsari district. Before independence, Chiku from this area was also sent to Lahore and Karachi in
Pakistan. The supporting documents and confirmation of which are that Chiku trees bearing fruit for more
than 90 years are still seen in this area today. In addition, all the farming methods have been observed
after 1935 by the Fruit Research Center, N.K.U., Gandevi for the development of maximum horticultural
activities in South Gujarat and for the first time in the world, Chiku was grafted on the rootstock of Rayan.
From time to time, The GI tag of “Amalsad Chiku” will prove to be a boon for the overall development and
well-being of the region due to the favorable climate for Chiku cultivation, modern farming methods and
structured market management for farmers and entrepreneurs involved in Chiku value addition.
